"The Holy
Way"
a condensed version of the
sermon delivered by Rev. Kirk Moore on Sunday, December 16, 2007 at Union Congregational Church in Somonauk, Illinois.
PODCAST of "The Holy Way"
Weve been experiencing
similar themes during this advent season:
- Preparation
- Hope
- Restoration
- Unlikely allies
- The unexpected
unfathomed reversal of what is to what can and will be.
And today were continuing
with
- The refreshment of a parched
land and parched souls.
- Strength for those in fear
and who are weak
- Hearing and seeing for those
who cannot
- The absence of danger
- Joy and gladness
- Gods vengeance on the
enemy
- A journey with God with
nobody unclean allowed.
Let me repeat those last two
they seem to stand out:
- Gods vengeance on the
enemy
- A journey with God with
nobody unclean allowed.
Here we go right in the
middle of a Bible reading filled with more hope, strength,
refreshment and healing are some fear-filled, mean words.
"Here is your God. He
will come with vengeance, with terrible recompense."
This isnt the only place in
the Bible where God comes with anger and judgment
- (Deuteronomy 32:40-42 NRSV)
For I lift up my hand to heaven, and swear: As I live
forever, {41} when I whet my flashing sword, and my hand
takes hold on judgment; I will take vengeance on my
adversaries, and will repay those who hate me. {42} I
will make my arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall
devour flesh-- with the blood of the slain and the
captives, from the long-haired enemy.
- (Numbers 32:10-11 NRSV)
The Lord's anger was kindled on that day and he swore,
saying, {11} 'Surely none of the people who came up out
of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the
land that I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to
Jacob, because they have not unreservedly followed me--
- (Joshua 7:1 NRSV) But
the Israelites broke faith in regard to the devoted
things: Achan son of Carmi son of Zabdi son of Zerah, of
the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things; and
the anger of the LORD burned against the Israelites.
- (Jeremiah 15:14 NRSV)
I will make you serve your enemies in a land that you do
not know, for in my anger a fire is kindled that shall
burn forever.
None of the verses about
Gods anger and judgment are particularly comforting
but I have to try to understand them from the perspective of
someone who has been thrown from their home or their land. I have
to try to understand it from the perspective of someone who has
been exploited, abused and injured. It doesnt make me feel
comforted, but I can understand the desire for someone to want
not only relief from their situation, but also punishment for the
ones who have been the source of the theft, abuse and
persecution. Its also possible to understand God coming
with a vengeance and terrible recompense from a perspective that
God is coming to set things right to bring healing and
restoration to all who are in a crisis. So maybe this time it
isnt anger and judgment but lets remember
Gods anger and judgment are present in the Bible.
But then theres this other
verse:
"The unclean shall
not travel on it."
This one really bothers me.
Why, with all this talk about good
news for a people looking forward to restoration, is there talk
of someone being left out rejected from the good stuff?
- Are the unclean the
persecutors? Maybe but it doesnt seem to
fit.
- Are the unclean those who
have not gone through the ritualistic cleansing of the
time? Maybe, but why would a people who are living in
exile be worried about who has gone through the right
ritual?
- Is this statement about the
unclean rescinded with the statement that "no
traveler, not even fools, shall go astray?"
This is not the only verse about
the rejection of the "unclean."
- (Numbers 5:2-3 NRSV)
Command the Israelites to put out of the camp everyone
who is leprous, or has a discharge, and everyone who is
unclean through contact with a corpse; {3} you shall put
out both male and female, putting them outside the camp;
they must not defile their camp, where I dwell among
them.
- (Numbers 19:20 NRSV)
Any who are unclean but do not purify themselves, those
persons shall be cut off from the assembly, for they have
defiled the sanctuary of the LORD. Since the water for
cleansing has not been dashed on them, they are unclean.
When we look at this passage
during Advent were supposed to be reminded of Jesus.
Were supposed to think of the celebration of the Christ
child and the refreshment, reconciliation and rejuvenation Jesus
brings to the world.
And I think that Jesus comes with
a different agenda not one of anger and rejection, but of
reconciliation and acceptance:
"God will come with
vengeance, with terrible recompense."
- (Matthew 11:4-5 NRSV)
Jesus answered them, "Go and tell John what you hear
and see: {5} the blind receive their sight, the lame
walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead
are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them.
- (John 14:27 NRSV)
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not
give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be
troubled, and do not let them be afraid.
"The unclean shall not travel
on it."
- (Mark 7:18-19 NRSV) He
said to them, "Then do you also fail to understand?
Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from
outside cannot defile, {19} since it enters, not the
heart but the stomach, and goes out into the sewer?"
(Thus he declared all foods clean.)
- (Luke 11:37-41 NRSV)
While he was speaking, a Pharisee invited him to dine
with him; so he went in and took his place at the table.
{38} The Pharisee was amazed to see that he did not first
wash before dinner. {39} Then the Lord said to him,
"Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and
of the dish, but inside you are full of greed and
wickedness. {40} You fools! Did not the one who made the
outside make the inside also? {41} So give for alms those
things that are within; and see, everything will be clean
for you.
Jesus challenged the whole idea of
what was clean and unclean. Its as if he said that our own
greedy, selfish ugliness is what is really unclean. And if I
think of that kind of upside-down kind of logic of Jesus and try
to understand the verse that bothers me,
"When you get on the road
theres no possibility of all the nastiness. It will
be gone from you you will be clean."
Rejection of some while others
look forward in hope still gives me a sick feeling in my stomach.
But restoration from within as
youre heading down Gods road I like that.
So how can all of this help us
this Advent season as were continuing to get ready?
- We can expect Gods
refreshment
And we can share it with a
neighbor too!
- We can anticipate Gods
strength and healing
And we can offer comfort
and compassion to those who are suffering
- We can trust that God is
acting, working, moving and speaking
And we can listen for what
God is calling us to do to live our lives for Gods
justice.
- We can get off the road of
selfishness, anger and greed and get on Gods road
And we can trust that
theres no falling of or getting kicked off the Holy
way.
